Trump’s Remarks Trigger Political Backlash
US President Donald Trump has sparked a fresh political controversy after calling some Democratic candidates in the upcoming US midterm elections “jihadists.” Trump made the remarks while speaking with reporters in the Oval Office.
His comments have attracted widespread attention and renewed criticism over his rhetoric toward Muslim communities and immigrants.
When reporters asked Trump about Republican strategies for the midterm elections and Democratic candidates, he said the United States was seeing “jihadists being elected all over the place.”

Trump argued that radical ideologies were gaining influence in American politics. He also criticised Democratic leaders over their positions on institutions such as the US Supreme Court and the Senate, describing some of their proposals as “stupid.”
Trump Criticises Immigrants and Somalia
Trump further intensified the controversy with remarks about people of Somali descent. Referring to Somalia, he questioned the intelligence and abilities of people from the country.
Civil rights groups and political opponents strongly criticised his comments.
Trump has faced similar criticism in the past for statements about immigration and Muslim communities during previous political campaigns.
Social Media Posts Add to Controversy
Trump also fuelled the debate through posts on Truth Social. One post featured Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed speaking to a crowd that included women wearing hijabs. The post carried the message, “They are coming for your home and belongings.”
In another post, Trump contrasted photographs of himself and First Lady Melania Trump with El-Sayed and his wife. He captioned the images, “Two VERY DIFFERENT Americas.”
El-Sayed recently won the Democratic nomination for the US Senate seat in Michigan after defeating Representative Haley Stevens in a closely watched primary contest.
El-Sayed Responds to Trump
El-Sayed rejected Trump’s attacks and accused him of trying to divide Americans. Speaking to CNN, he said the image of him and his wife represented a family built on mutual respect and love rather than political fearmongering.
He also accused Trump of using inflammatory language to influence public opinion ahead of the midterm elections.
Republican Leaders Face Criticism
Several Republican leaders also made controversial statements about Muslim politicians following Trump’s remarks.
Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville called El-Sayed a “radical Islamist” and referred to him as a “terrorist.”
South Carolina Representative Nancy Mace also made controversial comments on social media and claimed that Muslim public officials could pose a threat to national security.
Midterm Elections Could Intensify the Debate
The controversy comes as Republicans and Democrats prepare for a highly competitive midterm election campaign. Immigration, national security and cultural issues will likely remain major topics in the political debate.
Trump’s remarks have once again exposed deep divisions in American politics over religion, immigration and the role of minority communities in public life.
Political analysts say the comments could energise some of Trump’s supporters, while Democrats may use the controversy to mobilise voters who oppose discrimination and inflammatory political rhetoric.
As the campaign gains momentum, Trump’s remarks are likely to remain a major point of political debate ahead of the US midterm elections.
