Tension gripped the national capital on Monday as a large protest march organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) witnessed clashes between demonstrators and security personnel near Parliament. Protesters attempting to march toward Parliament were stopped by police, leading to confrontations that resulted in the use of tear gas shells and baton charges to disperse the crowd. Several protesters reportedly sustained minor injuries and received first aid at the protest site.
The march began from the Sansad Marg area, with hundreds of students, youth activists, and supporters of the CJP participating in the demonstration. Protesters were demanding greater accountability from the government over issues related to the education system and other public concerns. As the crowd moved closer to Parliament, security personnel established multiple barricades outside the Sansad Marg Police Station and on Raisina Road, approximately 200 metres from Parliament, preventing the marchers from advancing further.
According to eyewitnesses, the situation turned tense when some protesters attempted to move past the barricades. Delhi Police responded by using batons to control the crowd, while tear gas shells were fired to disperse demonstrators. The incident briefly created panic in the area, although emergency medical assistance was made available for those who suffered minor injuries during the confrontation.
Earlier in the day, hundreds of students and youth activists had gathered near Mandi House Metro Station before beginning their march towards Jantar Mantar and Parliament. The protest attracted significant public attention, prompting authorities to deploy a large number of police personnel across central Delhi. Security arrangements around Parliament were strengthened to prevent any breach of the high-security zone.
As a precautionary measure, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced the temporary closure of five metro stations due to security concerns. Authorities later reopened the gates of Central Secretariat and Rajiv Chowk stations and restored interchange facilities after reviewing the security situation. Commuters experienced delays and inconvenience during the temporary restrictions.
Amid the ongoing protest, the Cockroach Janta Party stated that the Central Government had reached out for dialogue. The organization confirmed that two of its spokespersons, Ashutosh Ranka and Sourav Das, would meet Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda to present the group’s demands. The announcement was seen as a possible attempt to reduce tensions and initiate discussions between the protesters and the government.
The protest also received attention after activist Sonam Wangchuk announced that he was prepared to end his hunger strike if the government accepted responsibility for shortcomings in the education system or if Members of Parliament agreed to raise the issue during the ongoing Monsoon Session. Wangchuk also wrote to Safdarjung Hospital, expressing his intention to participate in the Parliament march despite his fast.
The developments coincided with the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, where Opposition parties demanded discussions on issues related to question paper leaks and student protests. Political leaders argued that concerns regarding the education system deserved immediate attention in Parliament, while the government appealed for constructive debate and smooth functioning of both Houses.
Security remained on high alert throughout the day, with police maintaining barricades around key government buildings and sensitive locations in central Delhi. Authorities urged protesters to maintain peace and follow lawful procedures while exercising their democratic right to protest.
