The session began with customary proceedings, including obituary references to several distinguished personalities. Both Houses paid tribute to Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former ruler of Qatar, along with other eminent individuals who had recently passed away. However, the atmosphere soon turned confrontational as Opposition members pressed for discussions on issues they described as matters of urgent national importance.
In the Rajya Sabha, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge strongly raised concerns over the alleged question paper leaks and the protests taking place at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. He accused the government of attempting to suppress the voices of protesting students and urged the Chair to allow an immediate discussion on the issue. Opposition members insisted that the government should respond to public concerns regarding the integrity of examinations and the handling of student demonstrations.
As protests intensified, repeated slogans and interruptions forced the Chair to adjourn proceedings multiple times. Chairman V.P. Radhakrishnan appealed to members to maintain order and participate in discussions through parliamentary procedures. To resolve the impasse, he convened a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee in an effort to build consensus among political parties and restore normal functioning of the House.
The Lok Sabha also witnessed similar scenes, with Opposition MPs raising slogans and demanding that the government address the concerns over examination irregularities and student protests. The disruptions prevented the House from taking up scheduled legislative business, resulting in repeated adjournments. Both Houses were eventually adjourned until 2 p.m., but no substantial work had been conducted by that time.
Ahead of the start of the Monsoon Session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the media outside Parliament and appealed to all political parties to ensure the smooth functioning of the House. He urged the Opposition to participate wholeheartedly in parliamentary proceedings and engage in constructive debates on issues affecting the nation. The Prime Minister emphasized that Parliament serves as the highest democratic forum where differences should be resolved through discussion rather than disruption.
The Monsoon Session is expected to be politically significant, with the government preparing to introduce and discuss several important bills and policy matters. However, the Opposition has indicated that it intends to continue raising issues related to examination paper leaks, student protests, and other matters it considers to be of public interest. Political observers believe these issues are likely to dominate parliamentary discussions in the coming days.
The repeated disruptions on the opening day highlight the continuing political tensions between the government and the Opposition.
