PM Modi Praises Lovlina Borgohain for Objecting to Distorted Map of India at Glasgow Restaurant

PM Modi Praises Lovlina’s Gesture

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised boxer Lovlina Borgohain for objecting to a distorted map of India displayed at a restaurant in Glasgow.

Modi made the remarks while interacting with Indian athletes who returned from Scotland after the Commonwealth Games. During the meeting, he asked Lovlina about the incident that had gone viral on social media.

“Kya hua wo restaurant waale se jhagda kar rahi thi? (What happened, you were fighting with that restaurant guy?)” Modi asked in a light-hearted manner.

Lovlina, who won the silver medal in the women’s 75kg category, smiled and explained that she spoke to the restaurant management politely.

“It was a happy occasion, sir. We were celebrating and I didn’t like to see the distorted map. I politely told them and they have made the changes also,” she said.

PM Modi Calls the Gesture Memorable

Modi praised Lovlina for noticing the issue even while celebrating her sporting achievement.

He said, “To be able to recognise the significance of that map at a time when you were celebrating and the Games were over, I can tell you truthfully, that video was not ordinary. It will be remembered by people for a very long time.”

What Happened at the Glasgow Restaurant?

Lovlina visited a Glasgow restaurant with the Indian boxing contingent for a celebratory dinner after India secured a historic haul of 10 boxing medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026.

While checking the restaurant’s menu and logo, the Assam-based boxer noticed that the displayed map did not show India’s Northeast region correctly. She immediately raised the issue with the restaurant management.

Lovlina told the management that the missing Northeast region hurt her as someone from the region. She asked the restaurant to correct the map and thanked the staff for listening to her.

Her calm and respectful approach attracted widespread appreciation online. Many people praised her for raising the issue without creating a confrontation.

Restaurant Apologises and Promises Correction

Following the controversy, Mister Singh’s India issued an apology for the incorrect depiction of India’s map.

The restaurant said it would change its logo and use the correct map. It also thanked Team India for visiting the restaurant after their Commonwealth Games achievements.

Indian High Commission Raises the Issue

The Indian High Commission in the United Kingdom also took note of the incident and raised the matter with the establishment. The diplomatic mission sought corrective action from the restaurant.

The incident has highlighted the importance of accurately representing India’s territorial boundaries, particularly the Northeast region. Lovlina’s response drew attention because she raised the issue calmly and respectfully while representing India abroad.

With Prime Minister Modi publicly praising her actions, Lovlina’s response has received further attention as an example of standing up for accurate representation of the country.
